St Peters railway station is part of the CityRail network. Straddling the border of the Sydney suburbs of St Peters and Newtown, it services a residential and industrial area. This station does not have easy access for wheelchairs. St Peters is used by an average of 5180 daily weekday commuters.[1]
St Peters station opened on 15 October 1884 with the construction of the double-track Illawarra railway line to Hurstville[2]. The line was quadruplicated on 22 June 1913.[3] The station is located in a cutting, and immediately to the east of the station the tracks pass beneath the Princes Highway. The station has two island platforms each serving two tracks, of which only the western one (platforms 1 and 2) is regularly used as a stopping point for passenger trains. To the west of the station lies an incomplete island platform partially built as a plan to expand the tracks between Sydenham and Erskineville to six but it was never completed and has no tracks. The original platform buildings on platforms 1/2 were demolished in the early 1990s and replaced with modern shelters. The Clearways Project previously envsiaged that St Peters would have six tracks, with stopping trains serving only a newly built western-most island platform, however this project was cancelled in November 2008.[4]

Currently only Bankstown Line trains service St Peters station. This station is serviced by two to four trains per hour each way, with additional trains during weekday peak hours. Some trains on the Illawarra Line stopped at St Peters, prior to the construction of the Eastern Suburbs Railway and it was also serviced by East Hills Line trains until around 1990.
During trackwork some Illawarra line trains may stop at St Peters as an additional stop.
